The Making of the Model. The Making of Intimacy (November 20, 2018)

On November 20, 2018, I gave a presentation entitled La fabrique du modèle. La fabrique de l’intimité (The Making of the Model. The Making of Intimacy) as part of the interdisciplinary seminar Corps à l’affiche, organized by Anne-Claire Duchossoy at Bordeaux Montaigne University. This event brought together researchers from various disciplines to examine representations of the body and intimacy in visual arts and contemporary media.

Modeling Intimacy: Between Norm and Transgression

The idea of the model in art and photography is based on a tension between staging and unveiling, control and spontaneity. In this presentation, I analyzed how the making of the model contributes to a visual construction of intimacy, particularly through:

  • Framing the body: how the image shapes and imposes a posture on the model.
  • The tension between natural and artificial in the representation of intimacy.
  • Issues of gender and power in the relationship between photographer and model.

When Intimacy Becomes an Object of Exhibition

This presentation also explored the boundaries between the private sphere and public space, by addressing:

  • Narratives of intimacy in photography and cinema.
  • The influence of social media on the construction of contemporary intimacy.
  • The limits of staging the body: between hypervisibility and image control.

A Critical Look at the Image of the Body Today

By combining artistic and theoretical approaches, this presentation examined new forms of body representation and the ethical issues involved in constructing the gaze. The analysis of contemporary practices highlighted the making of intimacy as a space of tension between power, desire, and self-staging.
