In my article The Imagination of Japan: from fantasy to the direct and indirect influences of Comme des Garçons, published in December 2023 in the Journal of Japonisme, I explore how the fashion house Comme des Garçons, founded by Rei Kawakubo, operates within a complex dynamic between reality and the imaginary of Japan. Blending cultural heritage, aesthetic disruption, and Western influence, the article analyzes how this brand deconstructs stereotypes while reinventing Japanese fashion on the international stage.

An Aesthetic Between Tradition and Avant-Garde

Since its founding in 1969, Comme des Garçons has established itself as an essential reference in conceptual fashion. Rei Kawakubo disrupts Western norms by incorporating elements into her creations inspired by Japanese craftsmanship, wabi-sabi, and the aesthetics of emptiness, all while adopting a deeply experimental approach.

Through an analysis of the collections and the brand’s critical reception, the article examines how Comme des Garçons engages with the imaginary of Japan, navigating between authenticity, reinterpretation, and subversion of expectations.

Japonism and Fashion: A Western Fascination

Japan’s influence on European fashion is nothing new: since the 19th century, Japonism has fueled the Western artistic imagination. However, in the case of Comme des Garçons, this influence works like a mirror: the brand absorbs and redefines cultural references to offer a hybrid aesthetic rooted in a Japanese identity that breaks away from traditional norms.

The article highlights how Rei Kawakubo’s creations blur the boundaries between fashion and art, clothing and sculpture, tradition and modernity, presenting a vision of Japan far beyond the exotic clichés often circulated in the West.

A Critical Perspective on Cultural Identity in Fashion

By revisiting the direct and indirect influences of Comme des Garçons, this study questions the notions of globalization, appropriation, and authenticity within the fashion industry. Does Rei Kawakubo deconstruct stereotypes or amplify them in order to better subvert them? Does her work represent a resistance to homogenization, or an aesthetic dialogue between East and West?
