Technologies and Metamorphoses of the Body On-Screen: The Revolution of Nick Knight (October 2023)

In issue 19 of the journal Écrans, co-edited with Quentin Petit dit Duhal, I explored the transformation of the body’s image through new technologies in the article Entre mode, corps et virtuel. La révolution de Nick Knight (Between Fashion, Body and Virtual: The Revolution of Nick Knight). This text analyzes the impact of digital media and artificial intelligence on the aesthetics of fashion and the representation of the body on screen.

Nick Knight: A Photographer at the Digital Vanguard

Since the 1990s, Nick Knight has profoundly transformed fashion imagery by pushing the boundaries of the photographic medium. Through digital and multimedia experimentation, he has challenged the conventions of fashion photography, once dominated by print and magazines. With the rise of the Internet and new technologies, his work has shifted toward a speculative vision of the body and clothing, exploring the possible futures of human appearance in the digital age.

AI and Fashion: A Body in Perpetual Mutation

In this article, I analyze how artificial intelligence and digital technology allow Knight to manipulate the image of the body, turning it into a field of experimentation where the boundaries between the real and the virtual, the human and the machine fade. His projects go beyond documenting fashion; they contribute to a broader reflection on the evolution of the body in a technologically advanced world.

A New Aesthetic of the Body and Clothing

Far from simply reinventing fashion photography, Nick Knight’s work belongs to an artistic and philosophical quest: how are technologies redefining our perception of the body and clothing? Thanks to artificial intelligence and digitally generated images, he proposes a world where the human form becomes malleable, adaptive, and fluid—aligned with a future where fashion is experienced beyond the tangible.
