On March 8, 2022, I participated in the conference-discussion Steve Giasson Talks to Others, organized online via Zoom in connection with the exhibition Steve Giasson as Others, presented at the Carleton University Art Gallery. This meeting brought together Jean-Michel Quirion (exhibition curator), Mélanie Boucher, Didier Morelli, and myself, in dialogue with the artist Steve Giasson.

Steve Giasson Talks to Others, a discussion about the work of Steve Giasson, with Jean-Michel Quirion, Mélanie Boucher, and Didier Morelli, conference-discussion via Zoom in connection with the exhibition Steve Giasson as Others, Carleton University Art Gallery.
A Reflection on Otherness and Citation in Art
The exhibition Steve Giasson as Others focuses on the idea of artistic appropriation and the subversion of images. By drawing from visual and conceptual references from other artists, Giasson explores notions of originality, filiation, and transformation in contemporary art.
During this discussion, we explored:
- The role of citation and reinterpretation in Steve Giasson’s artistic practice.
- The links between performance, photography, and visual memory.
- Artistic identity and the dissolution of the creator through works that appropriate and transform others’ work.
An Exchange Between Artists, Researchers, and Curators
This conference was also an opportunity for an open dialogue between artists and theorists, where Steve Giasson shared the references and influences that nourish his approach, while confronting his point of view with our critical readings of his work.
