Reflections on Posthumanist Fashion: A Foray into Photography and Bodily Confusion (May 28, 2021)

On May 28, 2021, I had the immense honor of presenting my research at the international conference “Polìticas y narrativas del cuerpo / Politiques et récits du corps / Politics and Narratives of the Body.” My presentation, titled “La photographie de mode posthumaniste, une confusion corporelle à l’objet” (“Posthumanist Fashion Photography: A Bodily Confusion with the Object”), delved into the complexities of fashion in the posthuman era and its impact on the perception of the human body.

Exploration of Posthumanist Fashion

My presentation explored how posthumanist fashion photography uses the image of the body to question and often deconstruct traditional notions of the human. I analyzed works where the body is no longer limited to its biological form but becomes a hybrid—fused with the object—thus reflecting a new reality shaped by technology and contemporary culture.

Impact of Discussions and Debates

The presentation sparked strong interest among participants, including renowned thinkers such as Jean-Luc Nancy, Judith Butler, and Roberto Esposito, members of the conference’s honorary committee. The discussions that followed enriched the session by offering multidisciplinary perspectives on the implications of posthumanist fashion for our understanding of the body and identity.

Personal and Professional Contributions

Participating in this conference marked a significant milestone in my career, allowing me to contribute to the global discourse on posthumanism and fashion photography. The exchanges pushed me to refine my arguments and reflect more deeply on how technologies are reshaping our relationship with the body.

This experience at the international conference not only enhanced my academic knowledge but also broadened my professional network, connecting me with experts and scholars from various backgrounds. It highlighted the importance of continuing to explore the fluid boundaries between human and machine, the natural and the artificial.
