Book: Arts et Cyborgs. Pensées et imaginaires des corps-machines

Abstract

Situated at the intersection of organism and cybernetics, cyborg figures evoke an artificial, hybrid identity that is perpetually oriented toward the future. While their representations sometimes participate in imaginaries of domination, they more often function as tools of emancipation, proposing new forms of political subjectivity.

Within artistic practices, cyborgs critically interrogate cultural systems and sociopolitical norms—particularly those related to patriarchy, ableism, coloniality, and capitalism. The posthumanist framework associated with them, understood as an artistic approach centered on the technological transformation of the body, opens up the possibility of alternative futures.

Drawing on art history and philosophy, this book explores the diverse artistic registers in which cyborg figures emerge, as well as the ways in which they prompt a rethinking of identities, power structures, and boundaries—whether between human and non-human, masculine and feminine, or the living and the inert.

Authors

Quentin Petit Dit Duhal holds a PhD in Art History and has taught in several universities and art and design schools. His publications and edited journal issues address questions related to gender studies, queer studies, posthumanism, and, more broadly, politically engaged art. He is the author of Art queer, published by Éditions Double ponctuation.

After completing studies in philosophy and art history, Jessica Ragazzini is a lecturer at the Université du Québec en Outaouais and an affiliated researcher at the Université de Strasbourg. Her research focuses particularly on the tension between the reified body and the humanized object. The author of numerous articles and conference papers, as well as a co-editor of academic journals, she is also an independent curator.

Éditions Double ponctuation publishes books structured around five main thematic axes:

  • gender / feminism / LGBTIAQ+ / anti-discrimination
  • environmental urgency / biodiversity and conservation / resistance to predation and extractivism / animal condition
  • alter-globalization / anti-colonialism / Indigenous peoples
  • bibliodiversity / transformations of the book and writing
  • music / arts and popular cultures / gaming

Across these five axes, published works may advance differing perspectives—the primary objective being to contribute to critical reflection on these issues. Likewise, the publications may take various forms, although essays in the humanities and social sciences currently predominate. Finally, the books are organized into thematic series.
